Foot problems associated with diabeties are a signficant portion of health risk and cost. 60% to 70% of patients have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage. Diabeties can cause impaired sensation or pain in the feet. 67% of all lower limb amputations in the U.S. result from this disease. 80% of the amputations were preceded by a foot ulcer. Costs are 5.4 times higher the first year. Costs are 2.8 times higher second year.

For many patients with diabetes, not wearing therapeutic footwear isn't worth the risk. Wearing therapeutic footwear lowered amputations by 45% to 85%.
